CW Hood 43 Express
The new CW Hood 43 Express has a lot going on, from its helm station, which is mounted on a centerline pod aft in the salon, to the performance-enhancing, fuel-saving Sea Rider surface drives under its hull. Indeed, the boat was just named Best Powerboat at the Newport, Rhode Island, boat show, where more than 700 models from 16 to 85 feet long were on display. The judges praised the Hood 43 - with its low, classic lines and unbroken sheer that sweeps gently from the fine bow all the way to the transom - for its elegant Down East design, overall quality and innovation. The advantage of the aft helm station, says Chris Hood, head of CW Hood Yachts of Marblehead, Massachusetts, is that the captain is part of the action. "You don't have to turn your head around to talk to everybody," says Hood. The galley is down, with a large seating area, and leads to an open stateroom forward. The entire interior - done in satin-finished cherry with white panels in the classic Herreshoff style - is open, from the cockpit doors to the bow. With twin Cummins 550 hp diesels driving the Sea Rider surface props, Hood estimates the boat will cruise comfortably at 32 knots and top out in the 40s. You can see the boat for yourself at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. We'll have a full review in a future issue.
