Speeds measured by GPS off Miami, Fla., in calm seas with two people on board, half fuel and half water. Sound levels measured at the helm in dB-A. WHEEL TIME: The Jaguar, which was designed by former racer Moreno Maestrelli, is a joy to drive once you have the trim set up. The deep-V hull is a true coastal performer; it copes well with waves and lets the driver feel firmly in control at all times. This is partly due to the good steering and throttles, but the boat also has a solid feel. A bowthruster gives that extra measure of control when docking. POWER SUPPLY: With its diesel power it may lack some of the top-end speed of gas-powered competitors, but when the going gets tough off the coast, the Jaguar will come into its own. Diesels offer extended range (about 225 nautical miles at a 32-knot cruising speed with test power). In a world running short of oil, diesels may be the way ahead for the future. Total Yacht Sales www.totalmarine.com | What do you get when you combine the practicality and seaworthiness of a rugged center console with the aesthetic flair of a boat designed and built in Italy? The answer is the Jaguar F36 SoleSole, which I think is one of the best looking and best performing models of its type. Like so many boats made in Italy, this one has its share of beautiful finishing touches—check out the teak rope lockers—but it has just as many functional features for serious boaters.
It is a center console, but not the conventional type built for those who troll baits every weekend. The Jaguar is a semicustom model made for the guy who likes the look of a sportfisherman but wants cruising features for his family. In the console, for instance, is a double berth where the kids can nap, a circular settee and a private head with standing headroom. There's a modest galley, too, but if you're serious about cooking on board, you can order an outdoor grill, which fits at the back of the leaning post.

| UNDER COVER: A berth and settee ar in the console. | Built in Viareggio by Cantieri Navale Firebird and distributed in the U.S. by Total Yacht Sales of Norwalk, Conn., the Jaguar's peer group includes Intrepid, which also builds semicustom boats for day cruising or fishing. The quality of the Jaguar is evident in the beautifully crafted teak decks, where white caulking is used to good effect, and in the curved teak doors that surround the sunpad. In the cabin, the wood paneling is a stunning limed oak. Style is a given on the F36, which sets a new standard for center consoles.
