One drawback to a separate pump is it may be above the waterline. If so, once the impeller no longer works well enough to prime itself, it might burn up completely. When impellers go to pieces, like this one has, track down all the parts in the hoses leading up to and away from the pump or those caught in the thermostat housing, oil cooler or heat exchanger.
