A missing impeller part might provide just enough restriction to overheat the engine.

When an impeller fails be sure to find all the loose parts or risk having them clog narrow passageways deeper in the cooling system. You might not notice a problem, but then next summer when seawater temperatures rise and you’re bucking a head sea trying to make it home before the weather turns worse, a missing impeller part might provide just enough restriction to overheat the engine. Piece together the offending impeller like a 3-D jigsaw puzzle then check for missing parts between the seawater pump and heat exchanger — or better yet, change that impeller annually and avoid the problem all together.
