Spare Flares
Expired flares are perfectly safe to have aboard as spares.

While expired flares won’t count toward Coast Guard minimum requirements, they’re perfectly safe to have aboard as spares for years beyond their expiration date. Discard any with signs of water damage — your local fire station can advise how — and mark the rest so you’ll use newest flares first in an emergency.
